Term: primer-sealer

« Back to Glossary Index

Definition of "primer-sealer" by Brushworks Painting:

A primer-sealer is a type of preparatory coating applied to surfaces before painting. It serves two main functions:

  1. Priming – It prepares and improves the adhesion of the topcoat (paint) to the substrate (surface), ensuring better durability and finish.
  2. Sealing – It seals porous surfaces (like new plaster, drywall, timber, or masonry), preventing uneven absorption of paint and blocking stains, tannins, or previous colours from bleeding through.

In the Australian painting industry, primer-sealers are commonly used on new or previously unpainted surfaces, water-damaged areas, or when transitioning between different types of paint (e.g., oil-based to water-based). They help create a uniform surface, enhance paint performance, and extend the life of the paint job.
