Definition of "pigment" by Brushworks Painting:

In painting and coatings, pigment refers to the finely ground, solid particles that provide color, opacity, and sometimes protective properties to paint. Pigments are insoluble in the medium or binder and are suspended within the paint to give it its visual and physical characteristics.

There are two main types of pigments:

  1. Organic pigments – Derived from carbon-based molecules, offering bright, vibrant colors.
  2. Inorganic pigments – Typically mineral-based, offering more muted tones and greater durability (e.g., titanium dioxide for white, iron oxides for reds and browns).

In the Australian painting industry, high-quality pigments are essential for achieving long-lasting, UV-resistant, and weather-durable finishes, especially given the harsh climate conditions.
