Term: micron

The term "micron" (symbol: µm) is a unit of length in the metric system, equal to one millionth of a metre (1 µm = 0.000001 m or 1×10⁻⁶ metres). It is commonly used to measure very small distances or thicknesses, such as:

• Paint film thickness (e.g., dry film thickness or DFT)
• Particle sizes in coatings or filters
• Surface profiles in abrasive blasting

In the painting and coatings industry, microns are especially important for specifying and verifying the correct thickness of applied coatings to ensure durability, protection, and compliance with manufacturer or industry standards.
