Definition of "baluster" by Brushworks Painting:
« Back to Glossary IndexA baluster is a vertical post or spindle that supports the handrail of a staircase, balcony, or railing system. Typically decorative as well as functional, balusters are evenly spaced and help prevent people from falling off the edge of stairs or elevated areas. They can be made from various materials such as timber, metal, stone, or glass, and are commonly used in both interior and exterior architectural designs.
In Australia, balusters must comply with building codes and safety standards, particularly regarding spacing (usually no more than 125mm apart) to ensure child safety.
