Definition of "turpentine" by Brushworks Painting:

Turpentine is a fluid obtained by the distillation of resin harvested from living trees, primarily pine trees. It is commonly used as a solvent for thinning oil-based paints and varnishes, and for cleaning brushes and painting equipment. In the painting and decorating industry, turpentine is valued for its strong solvent properties and its ability to improve the flow and application of oil-based coatings.

There are two main types:

  1. Gum Turpentine – Derived from the resin of pine trees through distillation.
  2. Mineral Turpentine (White Spirit) – A petroleum-based alternative, more commonly used in Australia due to its lower cost and reduced odour.

Note: Turpentine is flammable and emits strong fumes, so it should be used in well-ventilated areas with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
